GEEK CHIC: Hide Your MacBook in Plain Sight with BookBook

The Genius swarm was unexpected. Who knew that carrying my MacBook Pro into the Apple Store in a BookBook laptop case would inspire such a flurry of questions: “Is that really a lapbook case?” “Where did you get it?” “Who makes it?” “Do they make one for the iPad?” “Can I look inside?” “Wow, cool!” I felt like a rock star.

I didn’t buy the cleverly disguised laptop case that looks like an antique book to be the chicest geek at the Genius Bar. Rather, I’d bought it to reduce the risk of having my MacBook Pro stolen.

But based on the number of blue-shirted Genius admirers, it looks like innovative Mac accessory designer, Twelve South, has tapped into the collective desire for originality that’s core among true Mac fans.

Designed exclusively for MacBook Pro (and now iPad 2), not only does the vintage book design conceal my most essential travel tool, but the hardback leather cover, reinforced spine and padded interior provide serious protection from the rigors of the road.

My favorite feature: Who says you can’t judge a book by its cover? The handcrafted BookBook turned out to be as sturdy and functional as it is stylishly good looking.

My not-so-favorite-feature: Its bulk. While the hard protective cover and inner frame provide impact and crush-proof protection, it also adds a bit more heft and weight.

The bottom line: I love the stealthy security it delivers. For those seeking a laptop case that doesn’t scream expensive electronics, a BookBook case offers one of the most clever solutions out there.

Suggested retail price; $79.99. Available in classic black or vibrant red for 15” and 13” MacBook Pro at www.TwelveSouth.com.
