How to erase the stress of 30 travel hours? Hotel du Vin, Glasgow. Superb Scottish hospitality and pampered comfort.

We’ve all been there. Dazed and confused after hours, or days, of travel. Barely functioning and in desperate need of a warm welcome and a pillow-top bed. Gone are the days when I could arrive and hit the pavement running. Instead, I’ve taken to landing for a couple nights in a cushy retreat and easing into the local time zone. 

With 30 travel hours behind me, the Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens proved to be exactly the respite I’d hoped for and more. From the moment I stepped into the fire-warmed reception lounge and greeted with a soothing dram of whisky, I felt like the favored house guest of a gracious host. 

Located in a Victorian terrace in the fashionable West End of Glasgow—with monumental stain-glassed halls and room décors that range from opulent suites to a discreetly elegant style—the luxury boutique hotel is spread out internally over five three-story town houses. Facilities include a gym, spa treatment room and two private walled gardens. Room amenities go beyond the usual satellite TV to include DVD players, superb beds, elegant bathrooms, twice-daily maid service, and WiFi. 

En route to the Adventure Travel World Summit in Aviemore, Scotland, joining me for two nights at Hotel du Vin was longtime friend and luxury adventure travel consultant, Susan Kelly. Travel weary, we settled in and then met up downstairs for a leisurely dinner at the hotel’s Bistro restaurant.

I recall reading a review that described the Hotel du Vin properties as ‘restaurants with rooms’. While it was obvious that the posh accommodations at One Devonshire Gardens are more than just ‘rooms’, it was equally apparent that exemplary cuisine and fine wine are at the heart of the hotel’s reputation. The blend of Scottish and foreign accents that filled the elegant oak-paneled dining room on a Tuesday evening was a telltale sign that the restaurant is popular with both hotel guests and discerning Glaswegians.

There are many reasons to add One Devonshire Gardens to your A-list of luxury hotels, but perhaps my favorite feature of its relaxed hospitality is the abundance of cozy spaces to read the morning papers, enjoy an afternoon dram — there are more than 300 to choose from — or curl up with a book and a glass of wine. 

 

Room to Book: - The Michel Laroche room is a luxurious grand room with traditional, antique four poster bed and open fireplace. For a more contemporary feel, the Vettriano suite (named after the Scottish artist Jack Vettriano) is decorated exclusively in Vettriano paintings.

Insider Tip: Ask the concierge for a tour of the hotel’s wine cellar, home to 600 wine bins and a connoisseur’s haven. It is not open to the public so you need to ask the sommelier to escort you and let you taste some of the treasures down there.
